Proctor's Ledge

The actual site of the 1692 witch trial hangings was once thought to be the top of Gallows Hill.

It was officially confirmed in 2016 to be Proctor's Ledge, a wooded area between Proctor and Pope Streets, with a memorial now marking the spot.

While Gallows Hill was a known landmark and site for large bonfires, research by the Gallows Hill Project using old records and technology pinpointed Proctor's Ledge as the actual execution location, with victims hanged from trees on the ledge.

Proctor’s Ledge Memorial is a simple memorial, that honors those who were so terribly wronged.

It was dedicated on July 19, 2017, the 325th anniversary of the hangings of Sarah Good, Elizabeth Howe, Susannah Martin, Rebecca Nurse, and Sarah Wildes.

Embedded in the semi-circular wall are stones engraved with the names of the nineteen victims.
